Equifax Update

On September 7, 2017, Equifax announced a cybersecurity incident involving customer information. The incident potentially affected approximately 143 million U.S. consumers.

The breach is not an Associated Credit Union security issue, but we are looking into this situation with our security partners. ACU makes every effort to ensure our members’ financial security.

Equifax has established a dedicated website, www.equifaxsecurity2017.com, to help consumers determine if their information has been potentially impacted and to sign up for credit file monitoring and identity theft protection.

We recommend that you check your credit and enroll in fraud alerts. If you have an Associated Checking Account, we implore you to register for ID Theft Protection and the ID Theft Protection alerts. If you haven’t enrolled in ID Theft Protection, go to www.eclubonline.net and follow the step-by-step instructions to register. Please call 770.448.8200 (Option 3) to gain your activation code.

Finally, you have the option to freeze your credit. When you freeze your credit, you (or anyone masquerading as you) will be required to un-freeze your account by providing the PIN you received when you froze your credit. There are some drawbacks to freezing your credit:

  1. Each credit bureau could charge a fee ranging from $3.00 to $10.00 to place, temporarily lift, or remove a freeze.
  2. It could take anywhere from 15 minutes to up to three (3) business days to “unfreeze” your credit if you wish to apply for a loan.

To freeze your credit, contact each of the credit bureaus using the following phone numbers:

  1. Equifax: 800.349.9960
  2. Experian: 888.397.3742
  3. TransUnion: 888.909.8872

If you have properly frozen your credit, ACU cannot unfreeze your credit for you or on your behalf. To unfreeze your credit, please refer back to the confirmation notification you received from the credit bureaus when you intially froze your credit.
